Day 22 Aljucen to Aldea del
Cano 35 kms
Up at 4 am ‘cause today was our longest day yet, 35kms. We managed
to do it in 7 hours. I’m pretty proud of ourselves. We arrived in Aldea del
Cano pretty unscathed, even though we attempted to hitchhike once. After 15
minutes standing on a hot highway we decided to walk the last 7 kms. We must be
getting used to the heat because it was quite tolerable, I’m not sure I could
have said that 3 weeks ago.
Still a lot of Roman stuff along the way, bridges and even parts
of the original Roman road.
This camino is called “Via de la Plata”, not
because it was used to transport silver (Plata means silver in Spanish) but
because it was flat like plateau. The walks are pretty flat at this point.
We are again staying at a
fantastic “Casa Rural”. I won’t post a
picture but it is the old Moorish style designed house with an inner courtyard
but….. the best thing is the beds are long!! Most of the beds we have slept in
here are short, even for me and I am only 5’5”.
Day 23 Aldea del
Cano to Caceres 22kms
I’m tired again. But, you have to think.. what we are doing is like
walking a half marathon every day. We pushed ourselves hard yesterday, so today
we are paying for it. It is a good tired though.
Caceres is another great little city. It has the same history as
all the other surrounding cities
1.-started by the Romans
2.-after the fall of the Roman Empire the Visigoths took
over
3.-then the Moors took over
4.-then the Christians finally conquered
It too has all the combinations of all the different
types of architecture.
Day 24 Sick Day
Oh dear.. I haven’t been this sick in ages. I am not sure if it was food poisoning or a
bad case of the flu but it was a pretty bad night. Hopefully after some rest today I will feel better and we can put
in another long day tomorrow.
The good news about today is that Max has won the Canadian National
Title for Mountain biking again . What a
kid!! Olympics here we come.
gooooo max!!! Make Canada proud.
